Dal 1978 al 1980 la giapponese Rotel introdusse sul mercato un finale particolare, l’RB 5000, in grado di erogare una potenza impressionante (500 watt per canale che senza difficoltà sfioravano 1 kW di potenza di picco per canale) con un bassissimo livello di distorsione nel classico range di frequenza da 20 a 20.000 Hz.

Grazie ai due mostruosi toroidali che aveva in dotazione, questa corazzata giapponese (Rotel RB 5000) era in grado di pilotare i difficili diffusori che circolavano all’epoca (ricordo le grandi Infinity o alle Timpany della Magneplanar ).
Ma la cosa particolarmente interessante era che i primi (pochi) watt erogati da questo finale erano addirittura in Classe A, che poi passavano in Classe AB per tutto il resto della potenza.
La cosa curiosa fu che, all’epoca, vennero venduti più esemplari di RB 5000 in Italia che in Giappone, dal momento che questo modello era destinato esclusivamente al mercato estero.
Gli oltre 50 Kg di peso e le due maniglie sul frontale lasciavano intuire una poderosa struttura. Posteriormente vi erano tre coppie di morsetti per i diffusori (speaker A, B e C) una coppia di connettori d’ingresso RCA e una coppia XLR.
L’RB 5000 era considerato, per l’epoca, una macchina innovativa e molto sofisticata. In sostanza, una vera macchina da Musica.
Quotazione: 400/600 euro per un esemplare in ottimo stato.

The first stage is a DC pure complementary p-p differential amp with low-noise dual transistors.
The output stage is a Darlington dc 4-stage linear complete-mirrored parallel push-pull with four pairs of Toshiba 2SD0555 and 2SB600 ; due to its balanced structure, only low amounts of NFB are used.
Bias is of the sliding kind, with the first few Watts remaining in Class A, switched after that to Class B.
Rank-Arena, Rotel distributor in the UK, announced the RC and RB-5000 as novelties for 1979 ; Rank-Arena subsequently became Rotel Europe.
There was only one production run for the RB-5000 : the first serial for the RB is #833NB49071, where “833” is the product code for the 5000 combo.
