La serie delle originalissime testine Concorde (Concorde 30, 20 e 10) del 1979 avevano la particolarità del caratteristico disegno che consentiva di eliminare lo shell e montare direttamente la Concorde sull’attacco del braccio, oltre ad essere tra le poche testine ad avere una bassa massa.
Ho avuto una Concorde 30 montata su un braccio SME 3009 di un giradischi Thorens TD 160 Super. Era il 1965.
Io e il mio amico Valerio Maria Bonavia, molti anni più tardi diventati colleghi lavorando nella rivista Fedeltà del Suono, acquistammo ognuno una Concorde, e ci sembrava di avere tra le mani il miglior fonorivelatore del mondo.
Le montammo con la cura e l’attenzione che un acquisto “importante” meritavano. Il risultato fu emozionante, anche se nel corso degli anni seguenti affinammo sempre più i nostri gusti orientandoci gradatamente verso delle MC a bassa uscita.
Il risultato fu comunque emozionante. Eravamo felici e l’ascolto della musica dal vinile riempiva i nostri pomeriggi.
Lo scorso anno cadeva la celebrazione dei 95 anni della Ortofon (dal greco orto=corretto e fon=suono), azienda danese nata a Copenaghen nel 1918 con il nome di Electrical Phono Film Company per iniziativa di Axel Petersen e Arnold Poulsen con l’intento di realizzare un sistema di sincronizzazione audio cinematografico.
Nell’immediato dopoguerra la Electrical Phono cambiò nome in Fonofilm Industrie. Nel 1946 venne sviluppata la prima testina monofonica, mentre nel 1948 venne commercializzata la prima testina a bobina mobile. Con l’avvento della stereofonia, nel dopoguerra, si costituì la divisione chiamata Ortofon e iniziò la produzione di testine stereo.
Da allora L’Azienda è andata sempre più affermandosi con prodotti prestigiosi per la lettura degli LP, non solo testine, ma anche bracci di altissimo livello qualitativo. Ricordo un mio acquisto di pochi anni fa, un meraviglioso braccio Ortofon RS 309D, montato su un giradischi top di gamma della ProJect, il modello X-Tension.

La forma ricordava da vicino quella del famoso aereo presto andato in disuso a causa degli altissimi costi di gestione.
Per combinare i vantaggi di bassa massa e alta cedevolezza con un’alta uscita del segnale, fu necessario posizionare il cantilever all’interno di un microscopico magnete ad anello. Questa caratteristica costruttiva determinava una linearità eccellente unita ad un basso livello di distorsione.
Da anni la Ortofon è anche diventata un riferimento nel settore delle testine per DJ con modelli economici e robusti allo stesso tempo, in grado di sopportare forti sollecitazioni meccaniche. Da ricordare i modelli Concorde Nightclub MKII, Arkiv, Digitrack, Q.Bert e Concorde Pro.

ULM and low-mass tonearms & cartridges happened to be a quickly passing fad just before vinyl made way for CD, the latter being inherently low-mass… therefore justifying the building of 20kg, 30kg or 40kg CD drives.
And the Ortofon Concorde made for a lot of DJ’ing, an activity for which the necessary tracking force was and still is everything but low-mass.
Also: low-mass came up at a time a lot of audiophiles were beginning to be very much into old Ortofon SPU and new Goldbugs which were all… heavy high-mass heavyweights.
And many still use the good old Denon DL-103 at 3g today – low-mass and hifi don’t seem to ever mix well.

The one-piece Concord design makes installation a breeze and allows DJ’s to easily see the area of the record that the needle will sit in the groove. The Concorde Q-bert cartridges are a bit on the expensive side coming in at about $275 for a matched twin-pair, but the build quality is very high and they perform like champs. If you want to save a bit of money, then you can purchase the Q-Bert Ortofon cartridges in the OM-style where you can mount them to a headshell instead of the one-piece Concorde design. When using them with regular vinyl, the bass is deep and rich while output remains really high. When using them with DVS timecode vinyl, the digital signal is nice and round for a great signal. For scratching they are the BOMB! These will hold to the groove like glue after the somewhat long break-in period. These are great performers in the scratch arena and they are nice for all around mixing as well. We are going to recommend the DJ Q-Bert Ortofon Concorde cartridge to any vinyl DJ who appreciates a high output level with great bass response and the ability to stay in the groove under extreme turntablist situations.
